Introduction

Studying abroad in a completely new and foreign environment may seem initially daunting, which is why UC Berkeley offers a multitude of resources for study abroad students to become acquainted with the school.

Support for students studying abroad at UC Berkeley

For study-abroad data science students, one of the valuable resources is the Data Peer Consulting team, which consists of student consultants from a variety of backgrounds ready to discuss all things data. Our goal is to provide mentorship to peers in the data science community, both academically and professionally.

The Peer Consulting team holds drop-in office hours on technical data science concepts, professional development, and research pedagogy. These office hours are weekdays from 12-4 PM and are open to both UC Berkeley students and other students studying abroad at UC Berkeley. We want to make sure that students studying abroad at UC Berkeley can feel at home and have a safe space to gain data science knowledge. Our team also welcomes coffee chats, casual conversations, and career/internship/courses advice during our drop-in hours. We would love to share our experiences and advice on Berkeley’s Data Science program!

In addition, the Peer Consulting team regularly hosts workshops on topics ranging from technical data science techniques to resume building and networking. In Spring 2022, we hosted a LinkedIn and Resume Workshop to aid students in building their professional portfolios, as well as a SQL and Data Visualization workshop to enhance students’ analytics skills.

Study abroad resources for UC Berkeley Students

Studying abroad enables students to gain a more global perspective on the field of data science and all data science students are encouraged to consider studying abroad. While many of our Peer Consultants may not have the experience of studying abroad, we have compiled several resources to help you get started in choosing the best study abroad program for you.

The UCEAP Website

The UCEAP Website provides comprehensive details for studying abroad, which includes a list of available programs, student resources, and the study abroad application.

Study Abroad Advising

Advisors are available to answer both general and program-specific questions, as well as aid students in any stage of their study abroad experience. There are four types of advisors: peer advising, UCEAP advising, Berkeley Global Internships, and Berkeley Summer Abroad advising, and Financial aid advising.

Database of approved UCEAP courses to count toward the UCB Data Science Major

Not all courses at other universities, even if they are data science courses, may satisfy major requirements for the UC Berkeley Data Science Major. Luckily, UC Berkeley provides a comprehensive list of approved courses that can be used to satisfy major requirements, as well as the status of courses petitioned to gain approval.

More information on studying abroad for Data Science majors can be found on the Berkeley Computing, Data Science, and Society website.
